Ongoing Habitat Conservation Projects
Our members and community volunteers install new plants and weed out invasive plants at Holding Park Nature Garden monthly.
Senior citizens and our pollinators value the native garden we installed and continue to maintain at the Wake Forest Center for Active Aging. We also provide and maintain the patio flowers.
Children and adults alike work to count monarch eggs and maintain the Cascades at Stonemill Falls Butterfly Garden.
We commend the Town of Rolesville for prioritizing the removal of invasive plants and installing natives at Main Street Park. NRHC donates plants and organizes volunteer workdays. Funds for additional plants will be provided by the Rolesville Community Funding Program in fall of 2025.
Community Outreach Projects
NRHC chapter wildlife enthusiasts present on a variety of topics to area organizations.
Nature enthusiasts come together for monthly walks on trails in the greater Wake Forest area.
Our NRHC artistic members created the Little Nature Library located across the street from Holding Park. We keep it stocked with nature books for people of all ages.
Handy volunteers built and donated raised beds for the Northeast Community Garden.
Local groups invite us to share our knowledge with the community at events.
Completed Projects
Our volunteers collaborated with the Wake Forest Stormwater Department to determine the feasibility and benefits of installing pollinator plants at retention ponds in 2023.
NRHC gardeners supported a Girl Scout at Franklin Academy High School by providing design guidance, and donating plants and an educational sign for the native garden she installed at the school in 2024. We provided educational materials for the class on native plants she subsequently taught as part of her Gold Star project.
Volunteers meticulously installed and maintained the Wildlife Garden at Forest Ridge Park from 2017 to 2023.
We commend the Town of Wake Forest for their Bradford Exchange program in 2023. We volunteered with the Town for this wildly popular event in which the public could provide proof of having removed an invasive Bradford Pear in exchange for a life-sustaining native tree.
We witnessed the life cycle of bluebirds while gathering data from five bluebird boxes at Forest Ridge Park over two years under the auspices of the NC Bluebird Society.
NRHC members were invited to participate in the NCWF Wildlife Habitat Steward Training. We heard from many experts in the field of wildlife habitat restoration, visited a local native garden, and completed a native planting project.
